Portland State University

Portland is a city on the Willamette River in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The downtown area is relatively flat, while the surrounding landscape is quite hilly. It has a temperate climate, with colder winters than Hobart, but similar summers. It has a population of 652,000.

Located downtown since the 1950s, Portland State University has around 30,000 students. The campus is served by excellent cycling and walking facilities, light rail and an extensive bus network.

For its sustainability initiatives, it is among the top 15 green USA universities. The university has significant practical commitments to community engagement as part of learning and teaching, and its motto is “Let knowledge serve the city.” Its Institute on Ageing is focused on promoting age-friendly cities and its urban design approach is based on an innovative mix of academic, practitioner and community collaboration. It intentionally functions as an urban research university.
